How to Get to the Gorges du Verdon
How to get to the Gorges du Verdon — drive times from Nice, Marseille and Aix-en-Provence, the nearest airports and train stations, why there's no train to the gorge, and the day-trip option.
The single most important thing to know about reaching the Gorges du Verdon is that there is no train to the gorge — and no easy public transport once you’re in the area. Nearly everyone arrives by car or on a guided day tour from the coast or the Provence cities. This guide covers the realistic drive times, the nearest airports and stations, and why a day trip is so popular here.

There’s no railway to the gorge
The Verdon sits in the back-country of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, away from the main rail and motorway network. There is no train station at the canyon itself. The nearest rail access is at towns well outside the gorge — places like Manosque, Aix-en-Provence, Marseille or Les Arcs-Draguignan — from which you’d still need a car or an onward bus.
Regional buses (the Zou! network and similar lines) do reach gateway towns such as Castellane, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and Aix, but services are infrequent and not designed for sightseeing — they won’t get you around the rim roads or to the viewpoints. For independent exploring, a car or a tour is effectively essential.
Driving times to the Gorges du Verdon
By road, the gorge is a half-day’s reach from the main Provence and Riviera hubs. Approximate one-way driving times:
- From Aix-en-Provence: around 1h30 — the closest of the big cities, via the western approach toward Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and Lac de Sainte-Croix.
- From Marseille: around 2 hours.
- From Nice: around 2 to 2h15, on the long, scenic inland route — many tours from Nice run via the Route Napoléon toward Castellane, the upstream gateway to the canyon’s northeast.
- From Cannes or Saint-Tropez: similar to Nice, roughly 2 to 2h30 depending on the route.
These are driving times in good conditions; in July and August, summer traffic and busy village car parks can add a fair bit. The canyon’s own roads are narrow and winding, so don’t underestimate how long the loops between viewpoints take once you arrive.
Flying in
The two nearest major airports are Nice Côte d’Azur and Marseille Provence, each roughly a 2-hour drive from the gorge area. Both have good car-hire facilities, which is the usual plan for independent visitors. From either airport you can also pick up an organised tour from the nearby city.
The two gateways
When you arrive, you’ll come in through one of two gateway towns:
- Moustiers-Sainte-Marie — the western gateway, beside Lac de Sainte-Croix, closest from Aix and Marseille. Best base for the lake, the south-rim Corniche Sublime, and the village itself.
- Castellane — the upstream gateway to the northeast, the rafting and canyoning base, and the natural arrival point coming from Nice via the Route Napoléon. Best for the north-rim Route des Crêtes and Point Sublime.
Which one you aim for depends on what you want to do — see our guide to the best viewpoints and rim roads to decide.
Why a day trip is the easy option
Because there’s no train, the drive is long and winding, and the best of the canyon is spread across a wide loop, a guided day trip is the most popular way to see the Verdon — especially if you’re based on the coast or don’t want to drive abroad. A good day tour stitches the viewpoints, Lac de Sainte-Croix and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie into one circuit with the driving and parking handled.

A private or small-group tour is the most flexible way in. Before you go, check the best time to visit so your dates line up with the open season.
Skip the Logistics — Go on a Day Trip
With no train to the gorge and a long, winding drive, the simplest way in is a guided day trip from Nice, Aix or Marseille. The driving, the route and the parking are handled — you just enjoy the canyon. Most tours offer free cancellation.
