Lavender + Verdon Gorge

In Summer, the Fields and the Canyon Are One Trip

Why so many July tours combine them — and where to go deeper on lavender.

The Valensole lavender plateau sits right beside the Gorges du Verdon, so for a few weeks each summer the smartest way to see both is on one combo day. You get the lavender in the morning light, then drop to the turquoise Lac de Sainte-Croix at the canyon’s mouth and the clifftop village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, with its faïence shops and the gold star strung between two peaks. Purple fields, white cliffs and jade water in a single loop — the best scenery-per-day option in Provence.

Timing is everything: the Valensole lavender peaks roughly the last week of June through mid-July, and harvest begins soon after. Outside that window the gorge, the lake and the villages are still spectacular, but the fields will be green stubble — so if lavender is the goal, book your date carefully. Some combo tours add a boat or picnic on the lake; premium versions run as private vehicles with flexible timing.

This page is about the combo; for the canyon on its own see our Verdon Gorge day trips, and from the Riviera the day trip from Nice. For a proper deep-dive on the lavender itself — when each plateau blooms, where to photograph it, and how to visit responsibly — our sister site has the full guide to the Valensole lavender fields and its own lavender tours.

What Travelers Say

5.0/5

"We had a fabulous time. Tom was a great guide. We would highly recommend."

"We had the best time with Tom! He was fun and friendly, while being totally accommodating to us! We were lucky enough to have perfect weather and no crowds, allowing Tom to create the perfect day for us. He clearly knew all the best places, giving us recommendations for restaurants, museums, across our Provenance destinations from everything we had said we were interested in. He knew so much about the area that he was able to tell us on the drive, but if you prefer a quiet peaceful drive, he’s up for that too! Or to pull over and take pictures with the poppies! We really couldn’t ask for more. Great day with Tom!"

"Our trip to Gorges du Verdon, the lavender fields and beautiful villages with Tom was nothing short of magical. From the moment we left, his knowledge of the region, warm personality & genuine passion for sharing local treasures made the day unforgettable. The scenery at the gorge was breathtaking…sparkling turquoise waters framed by dramatic cliffs and lush greenery…and Tom made sure we experienced it from the best viewpoints, without feeling rushed. He prepared a picture-perfect French picnic for our canyon boat adventure that could have been straight out of a magazine. Every detail was thoughtfully curated: fresh baguettes, pate, charcuterie, olives, & regional wine that captured the essence of Provence. Our day also filled with easy, flowing conversation and the feeling that we were sharing the day with an old friend. Tom is not just a guide, he’s a storyteller, a host, and a connector of people and places. 5 Stars is not enough! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"

"Tom was an excellent guide from the moment we met. His energy and enthusiasm was felt immediately. We drove in a comfortable air conditioned van to Gorges du Verdon arriving at a lovely pier where our electric boats awaited. Tom provided us with coolers containing wine, water, pâté and numerous other foods along with a fresh baguette to take with us onboard and picnic whilst floating on the water. We had almost two hours on the waters to explore the canyon, swim and snack. Tom is the only tour guide who provides this! After returning to shore we jumped back in the cool van and travelled to some sunflower and then lavender fields, and given plenty of opportunity to take photos. Tom graciously acted as photographer! The last stop was a small village, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, on the lake side that hosted some beautiful scenery and a local restaurant that served lavender ice cream. A must try! Tom drove us back to Aix-en-Provence thereafter. A great day and one to be remembered!"

"We had such a brilliant time on this trip. Tom was lovely - really fun, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the region. Highlight of the day was the boat trip, it was such a beautiful day and Tom made amazing picnics for us all to enjoy on the boat. The gorge is stunning, the water is clear turquoise and you have 2 hours to explore and swim if you like. We also visited lavender and beautiful sunflower fields and Tom was happy to be the group photographer :) We also had some really great people in our small group of six who were a pleasure to meet and spend time with. Loved this day and will definitely do again when we come back 🤞"

"Tom from Happy Day in Provence was an absolute joy to be around. His customised tour exceed all expectations, including the picnic he made for each member of our group with tons of local samples. Transportation was comfortable and very thoughtful as our guide ensured we would get something out of every minute you are on the tour. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about our day and would definitely go with Happy Day in Provence on one of their tours again!"

"We had an amazing day thanks to our friendly guide Tom. He picked us up in a spacious vehicle with air conditioning. He had sent us information in advance about what we needed to bring for the day so we were prepared. Boating and swimming in the Verdon Gorge was so fun & relaxing. The picnic packed by Tom was delicious & plentiful. We also had the opportunity to swim in the lake of a cute nearby village. We got lucky that the lavender fields were in bloom during our tour allowing us to get wonderful photos. This tour was one of the highlights of our visit to France. 100% recommend!"

"Tom was an absolutely wonderful guide! We had an amazing boat ride with the most beautiful views. Tom packed us a lovely picnic and we were able to go for a quick swim to cool off!! The lavender fields were stunning (end of June visit) and the last stop at the lake for a second swim was so refreshing! Tom was extremely polite and such a pleasure to chat with! I highly recommend booking this day trip, you will not regret it!!"
