From Nice
The Riviera's Long Day in the Canyon
What to know before the early start.
Nice is the farthest of the main gateways — about two to two and a half hours from the Gorges du Verdon — so tours from the Riviera are long, early-start, full-day trips, often climbing inland on the legendary Route Napoléon. The pay-off is that you don’t have to move base: you can sleep on the coast and still spend a day among the canyon’s viewpoints, the turquoise Lac de Sainte-Croix and the clifftop village of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie.
Expect roughly five hours of driving across the day, broken up by belvedere photo stops over the gorge, time on or beside the lake, and lunch in a village. A few Nice departures add the Valensole lavender in season, making it a full Provence highlights reel.
If you can shift your base inland for a night, the day trip from Aix-en-Provence cuts the driving sharply, and the general Verdon Gorge day trips page lists every route. Once you arrive, you can also get onto the water with a boat or kayak tour. The Verdon is best May to September.

What Travelers Say
"One of the best experiences of my life. Such a luxury to be able to access these beautiful areas with someone else driving and knowing all of the best spots to stop. Our guide was Flo, amazing- truly exceptional driver with very high knowledge of the history and interesting information for the tour. Perfect and consistent communication with the company to arrange pickup and confirm. Seeing the gorge at many stops, browsing the villages and then getting to swim in the lake were great. We had a little over an hour at the lake- enough time to rent a pedal boat if you move quick. Bring water shoes for best experience."

"Tour was great. Justine, our tour leader was awesome! Highly recommend this tour. I enjoyed the boat ride."
"We had a wonderful day on this trip, truly one of the highlights of our time here. It was both enjoyable and informative, with just the right balance of guided insight and time to explore. The stops at the villages were especially memorable, offering beautiful scenery and a chance to experience the local charm up close. George was fantastic! He was attentive, knowledgeable, and made sure we knew exactly which sites to see at each stop, which made everything feel seamless and stress-free. What really stood out was his enthusiasm! He genuinely loves what he does, and that energy made the experience even more special. Highly recommend!"
"Elizabeth was our tour guide. She was fun, informative and provided a safe trip! Elizabeth connected with each of the eight members of our group. We enjoyed spending the day with her. Thank you Elizabeth!"
"Enjoyed it! Jeff was cool! Sad, due to the heat wave the lavenders had to be harvested earlier. Other than that, the trip was amazing. Spots were worth it with good view points, boat rides etc. Also, get swimwear."
"Incredible, worth the price. See so many incredible spots along the journey and the driver Mario is world class and a great person that makes the experience all the more better."

"The guide Mario is the best. He made the trip 10 times better. The views during the drive, village and lake are so scenic. Highly recommend this trip."

Planning the long but spectacular day from the Riviera.
About 2 to 2.5 hours each way by road, often via the scenic Route Napoléon. It's the longest of the main gateways, which is why Nice tours are early-start, full-day trips.
For many visitors, yes — you see Provence's grandest canyon, the turquoise lake and a 'most beautiful village' without changing your Riviera base. Just be ready for a long day with several hours of driving.
Typically viewpoints over the gorge, a stop at Lac de Sainte-Croix, and time in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, with round-trip transport from Nice. Some add the Valensole lavender in season.
Usually 10–12 hours door to door, given the distance. Expect roughly five hours of total driving, broken up by photo stops, the lake and a village lunch.
Early — often around 7–8 am — to make the most of the day. Exact times are on each booking page; set an alarm and don't be late, as these tours leave promptly.
Yes, in season (late June to mid-July) some Nice departures fold in the Valensole lavender. See our lavender and Verdon Gorge combo page for those options.
Yes — alongside coach tours there are small-group departures (such as the 5-star Napoleon Route tour) that are more comfortable and personal for a higher price.
Usually not; most tours allow free time for lunch in a village such as Moustiers. Check each tour, and bring water and snacks for the road.
If you can spend a night in Aix-en-Provence, the day trip from there is far shorter. But if you're committed to the coast, the Nice tour lets you see the Verdon without moving hotels.
Most Nice day trips allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Confirm on each booking page before you pay.
